Wolverine’s story with the X-Men is one of the most memorable events in comic book history. Although the X-Men was formed before Wolverine joined the picture, this so-called Project X helped develop the X-Men into what it is today—a powerful band of super-humans with a mission to defend both humans and mutants from abusive mutants led by Professor Xavier’s arch nemesis, Magneto.

In a survey tallying the most popular superheroes and best comic book heroes in the last decade, Wolverine has appeared on top of the list along with other X-men alumni and Marvel heroes such as Superman, Spiderman and Ironman. Wolverine’s abilities are different from most superheroes today—neither does he use laser projecting from his eyes or magic powers to overpower his opponents. With his trusty Adamantium claws, he can cut through wood, stone, cement and even tough, unbendable metal.
If you walk up to any 90’s kid and ask him right off the bat the coolest and most powerful comic book superhero is, “Wolverine” would be one of the most common answers.
Wolverine’s origin is also one of the most dramatic stories on X-Men—he served in the Vietnam War along with other mutants and after his bout in Asia, returned to America only to be approached by Striker and his team of scientists. James Howlett, Wolverine’s human alter ego, was not always an animal on the run; he had been a lumberjack, a mercenary, and a simple guy with undoubtedly special powers. However, Logan’s natural healing abilities were of great interest to Striker’s team and upon his approval of becoming part of the Weapon X Project, he became what we now know today as Wolverine.
Wolverine has fought battles against mutants larger than himself as well as other Marvel characters such as the Hulk and Ironman. His ability to slice through thick objects, heal quickly than the average human being and carry weights that are impossible for normal human beings to do have helped him conquer his adversaries.
Wolverine became more popular still when Hugh Jackman brought this super-soldier to the silver screen in the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. Although Wolverine might not be a real human being, he has been idolized by kids and adults alike who grew up with the original X-Men series.
