Robin Hood was a popular character in England who was popular for stealing from the rich and distributing his stolen wealth among the poor. Although historians could not pin point who wrote the story of Robin Hood nor confirm the existence of the thief and the same time, a saint, Robin Hood and his band of thieves became a tale so popular in England during the medieval era that the story of this mysterious gentleman lives on today.

According to Historians, the story of Robin began when a new leader of the state imposed a revised tax bill upon the poor residents. It is believed that Robin belonged to the rich society and had no trouble paying the outrageously high taxes but he felt compassion for those who were tortured due to their inability to pay. According to other sources, Robin’s vast properties were taken from him without his knowledge and without reason by the new ruler; he slowly resorted to living in the forests of Sherwood where he began planning for revenge.

Robin Hood recruited other men who felt the new ruler was abusive and as one group, they stole from royal carriages and shared their newfound treasures to the poor. They were basically known for “robbing from the rich and giving to the poor”, but this fame did not compromise their plans one bit.

When the legend of Robin Hood grew more popular and eventually reached other kingdoms, writers began to retell his and his merry men’s journey into something a hero would do. Today, film producers have created feature films of this uncanny band of thieves using stories told by medieval writers. Although Hollywood has affected the outcome of these movies to a certain point, movie producers have always made Robin Hood a heroic figure.

Now, If Robin Hood was such a hero, why was he never considered a historical figure instead of a legendary character? According to experts in this field, it is believed that this hero who stole from the rich and gave to the poor never actually existed and is in fact, just a story passed on by poor travelers to one another to inspire them from the abusive taxes imposed upon them by their leaders. Robin Hood served as a figure that peasants and abused peasants could look up to for strength during this tough economic crisis. It may them believe that someone out there is brave enough to help the poor and not all royals or those who belonged to the high society were snotty and cared less for the masses.
