Thinking about a Michael Jackson costume for this year’s Halloween party or other festivity? You have several to choose from, depending on which period in the singer’s life that you wish to focus on. The “Billie Jean” costume is one of the most popular.

Off the 1982 album “Thriller”, the song “Billie Jean” was actually inspired by a real life event in which one of Jackson’s fans accused him of fathering half of her set of twins. Obviously, she was found to be mentally disturbed.

In 1983, it was one of the best-selling singles, topping charts in the UK and the US. It was featured in the Pepsi commercials, found a spot in video game history and has been covered or sampled by dozens of modern artists. So, it’s a song that most people will recognize. But, you don’t really need the voice, as long as you dress the part.

What do you need to play the role of the Pop King? That depends on whether you would like to recreate the image portrayed on the music video or during MJ’s performance at the Motown 25 Celebration.

If you want to look like he did in the “Billie Jean” video, your Michael Jackson costume should include a red bow tie, white and black wing-tip shoes, black leather pants and matching leather jacket, with an ultra-wide suede lapel, a pink shirt with white buttons and white socks. But, that is not the outfit that most people remember.

Jackson’s performance and costume at the Motown 25 Celebration is the most memorable. It was the debut of the Moonwalk and the “glove”, which eventually became a part of his signature look. One that he casually tossed to a fan in the 1990s recently sold at an auction in Australia for over $48,000.

The gloves were white, encrusted with dazzling jewels and no Michael Jackson costume from that era is complete without one. During the onstage performance at the Motown celebration, he wore matching jewel encrusted socks. His shirt and jacket were covered with black, blue and silver sequins.

No tie with this look, the shirt is open at the chest. Early on in the performance, he wore a black Fedora, which was tossed to the crowd.

Unless you are still sporting a somewhat outdated hairstyle, you will need a Jheri curl wig to complete your Michael Jackson costume. Remember, the glove goes on the left, not the right hand.
