During the course of the year, there is no better time for expressing oneself than Halloween. There is no other holiday or event that gives people license to dress however they want, no matter how ridiculous, but competition for the best halloween costume can be fierce. If you want to make a lasting impression with a hilarious costume, then you will need to think outside the box.

Of course, there are a great deal of commercially available Halloween costumes, some of which can be very funny. The humor in these costumes often arises from juxtaposition. For example, a large hairy man will probably get some laughs in one of those sexy nurse costumes, and an attractive woman can get lots of comedy mileage out of dressing like a bearded hillbilly. Role reversal is not the only way to get guffaws from a Halloween costume, however.

Sometimes, conceptual humor can go a long way when you want to make an impact with your halloween costume. For instance, a person could dress up as a toilet with a crown. This person might get some weird looks, but once they reveal that they are dressed as a royal flush, the hoots and chuckles will come in spades. Ten dollars and unlimited creativity is enough to make one smashing costume for Halloween. You just need to think out of the box and you need to open your mind to various recyclable materials. Below are tips on how to make a recycled costume that is perfect for Halloween and of course, cheap and easy to put together!

First thing you have to do is to plan: would you like to be a popular movie or TV show character? Or do you want to be an entirely new and unique character? You must conceptualize before creating. Take note that costumes of popular characters are difficult to imitate because they have a unique attire already. To look exactly like the character and not some cheap imitation, you might have to shell out cash and we don’t want to do that. In this case, if you want to make a cool Halloween costume from recycled materials, you need to dress up as a unique character. You could also dress up as popular Halloween monsters such as: vampires, zombies, ghosts, poltergeists, the Grim Reaper, some random guy with blood stains on his shirt, or my all-time favorite: a hobo.

You could also be an inanimate object that has come to life like a walking trash can, living trash bag, walking barrel, a person wearing a sack, or someone who has fallen into the city dumpster.

Just kidding.

So in this post, I’ll teach you how to make your own vampire costume using old clothes and dark make-up.

You will need black clothes, dark make-up, and you will need to shell out at least $5 on fake vampire teeth. It’s very easy to be a vampire on Halloween– it’s like dressing up as a Goth with sharp teeth.

First off, gather all your dark colored clothes together and just mix and match. Try black clothes with white, red or violet accents. Black must be a dominant color on your costume because vampires are known for loving the color black…

…Except this guy because he shops at Abercrombie.

Once you have the most formal yet Gothic get-up possible, it’s time to wear make-up– lots of it! According to Anne Rice novels, vampires are like Rock n’Roll stars. They wear heavy make-up with their hair down and they supposedly have dark nails. Here’s what you do: apply foundation and white powder to look pale– as if blood has not visited your central nervous system for years. If you have black lipstick, give it a go or if you want to look like a vampire seductress, go with dark red. Now, do your eyes; apply dark eyeliner underneath your eyes and dark eyeshadow on your eyelids. It gives that dark, Gothic appeal. Don’t overdo your make-up or you will look like…

Stay away from the raccoon look.

With a little make-up, ask someone to make two little red spots on your neck. This gives the appearance that you were bitten by another vampire and now, you’re one of them. Even though this may not be real, it’s cute to work with a little storyline too.

Modern vampires don’t use capes like the ones we see on TV, but if you have a black overcoat, it would be a good idea to use that for your costume as well. Once you’re done with the costume and make-up, you’re all set for Halloween as a modern vampire!

What kind of equipment do you use for your projection?

I borrowed a Canon projector (model unknown) for the display. I pinned a white sheet to the
inside of my window and aimed the projector at it. I had to use a reversed video so that the
text in the animation was readable from outside the house. Click here to see my set-up.
The DVD includes reversed versions of the animations that use text.

What do you use to create your animation?

I use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for drawing and Adobe Flash and After Effects for the animation.
I work as a freelance illustrator and animator so this is kinda what I do everyday. All the artwork
in the video is original and drawn by myself. My friend Dewi Wood created the sound track.
He is a profession musician and uses Logic Pro to compose the work.
