Though Halloween is traditionally a time for chills, thrills, and scares, a funny Halloween costume is becoming more popular every year. After all, it is a lot nicer to be known as someone with a sense of humor, instead of being known as a monster, werewolf, ghoul, or vampire.

During the course of the year, there is no better time for expressing oneself than Halloween. There is no other holiday or event that gives people license to dress however they want, no matter how ridiculous, but competition for the best halloween costume can be fierce. If you want to make a lasting impression with a hilarious costume, then you will need to think outside the box.

Of course, there are a great deal of commercially available Halloween costumes, some of which can be very funny. The humor in these costumes often arises from juxtaposition. For example, a large hairy man will probably get some laughs in one of those sexy nurse costumes, and an attractive woman can get lots of comedy mileage out of dressing like a bearded hillbilly. Role reversal is not the only way to get guffaws from a Halloween costume, however.

Sometimes, conceptual humor can go a long way when you want to make an impact with your halloween costume. For instance, a person could dress up as a toilet with a crown. This person might get some weird looks, but once they reveal that they are dressed as a royal flush, the hoots and chuckles will come in spades. Try to think of how you can turn a common term or a bit of language into a halloween costume idea; you should be able to imagine a number of concepts that will keep people cracking up for some time.

Halloween is traditionally a time for goblins and ghosts, but it is also a time for clever self-expression. No matter what your sense of humor is, there are numerous ideas out there for a funny Halloween costume.

If you hadn’t much time to set-up decorations around your home last year, it’s not too late to go all out this year. This season calls for a lot of decorating– that includes your home, your car, and even your lawn! There are so many things you could do to make your lawn a scary-looking venue; all it takes is a little creativity and lots of props. However, if you think setting up and building Halloween props is too much of a time-stealer, then you’d be surprised to find out quickly and easily you could set up these lawn decor. It takes only a minute to connect them and settle them on your lawn and unlike other decorations, they can stay on your lawn throughout the entire month, if you want them to. They’re that sturdy!

15 Piece Cemetery Kit

When people think of Halloween, they often think of scary, dark and foggy places just like the cemetery. Re-create your home to look like a ghoulish cemetery where the dead haven’t rested for a hundred years with this 15-piece cemetery set. It’s got tombstones, skulls, crosses, markers, moss and skeletons. It’s the perfect cemetery set that is sure to frighten trick or treaters!

15 Piece Cemetery Kit

Situate this cemetery kit in front of your doorstep or on your front lawn. Carve a few pumpkins out and put them all around the cemetery set to complete your cemetery-themed lawn. If you want a wider looking cemetery, get two of these sets and get crazy with your decorations!

3′ Ghostly Group Lawn Set (3 count)

Another great addition to make your lawn an even scarier sight is to add put a few ghost decor around your lawn. If you put ghosts in a circular formation, it would look like you’ve invited a bunch of ghosts to your party. You could use these ghostly group set along with your cemetery kit and you’d have the perfect cemetery scene.

3' Ghostly Group Lawn Set (3 count)

This ghostly group set comes with 3 ghosts that come with 3 stakes. The stakes and posts are made of plastic so you might want to strengthen the posts by using wood or by pounding the stake into soft ground.

Halloween Lawn Signs

Not a fan of scary Halloweens? If you’re inviting kids to your Halloween party, you might want to lighten up your Halloween dector up a notch; and that would mean, no scary looking ghouls or Gortraits on your party. Instead of scary cemetery sets or ghosts on your lawn, you might want to use funny Halloween signs instead.

Halloween Lawn Signs

Since this set is intended to give Halloween a lighter and less nightmarish meaning for kids, you won’t be seeing angry facial expressions on these pumpkins and ghosts. What you’ll get instead, are happy, smiling faces so young trick or treaters won’t think of Halloween as something to be scared about, but an event one could celebrate with friends.

Reaper Group (3 count)

On the other hand, if you won’t be accommodating kids to your party, these reaper group posts make good alternatives to the Ghostly group. Like the ghostly group, you will have to pin them into the ground as safely as you could since their posts are made of plastic but once they’re planted safely on your lawn, you will have come up with the most bada** lawn decor in the neighborhood.

Reaper Group (3 count)

Complete the grim reaper decor with a cemetery kit to resemble a haunted cemetery setting. Don’t forget to carve out as many pumpkins as you can!

Welcome But Beware Fence Post (2 count)

Although Halloween is all about scaring people, it’s also about making your home ready for huge, fun parties and what better way to give your house a scary and welcoming feel than with this “Welcome but Beware fence post”. Made of stable material, this fence post set features one post with ‘Welcome’ engraved neatly onto it and another with ‘Beware’ on it.

Welcome But Beware Fence Post (2 count)

Put this post set in front of y0ur door or better yet, get at least 6 and surround your front yard with them. Get crazy with the decorations, Halloween comes once a year!

Like Christmas and other events, you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on a costume to make Halloween memorable. If you want to don the most expensive attire; however, it is up to you. On the other hand, if you want to save as much money as you can but make Halloween as exciting and memorable like other events, you could always make your costumes from recyclable materials.

Ten dollars and unlimited creativity is enough to make one smashing costume for Halloween. You just need to think out of the box and you need to open your mind to various recyclable materials. Below are tips on how to make a recycled costume that is perfect for Halloween and of course, cheap and easy to put together!

First thing you have to do is to plan: would you like to be a popular movie or TV show character? Or do you want to be an entirely new and unique character? You must conceptualize before creating. Take note that costumes of popular characters are difficult to imitate because they have a unique attire already. To look exactly like the character and not some cheap imitation, you might have to shell out cash and we don’t want to do that. In this case, if you want to make a cool Halloween costume from recycled materials, you need to dress up as a unique character. You could also dress up as popular Halloween monsters such as: vampires, zombies, ghosts, poltergeists, the Grim Reaper, some random guy with blood stains on his shirt, or my all-time favorite: a hobo.

You could also be an inanimate object that has come to life like a walking trash can, living trash bag, walking barrel, a person wearing a sack, or someone who has fallen into the city dumpster.

Just kidding.

So in this post, I’ll teach you how to make your own vampire costume using old clothes and dark make-up.

You will need black clothes, dark make-up, and you will need to shell out at least $5 on fake vampire teeth. It’s very easy to be a vampire on Halloween– it’s like dressing up as a Goth with sharp teeth.

First off, gather all your dark colored clothes together and just mix and match. Try black clothes with white, red or violet accents. Black must be a dominant color on your costume because vampires are known for loving the color black…

…Except this guy because he shops at Abercrombie.

Once you have the most formal yet Gothic get-up possible, it’s time to wear make-up– lots of it! According to Anne Rice novels, vampires are like Rock n’Roll stars. They wear heavy make-up with their hair down and they supposedly have dark nails. Here’s what you do: apply foundation and white powder to look pale– as if blood has not visited your central nervous system for years. If you have black lipstick, give it a go or if you want to look like a vampire seductress, go with dark red. Now, do your eyes; apply dark eyeliner underneath your eyes and dark eyeshadow on your eyelids. It gives that dark, Gothic appeal. Don’t overdo your make-up or you will look like…

Stay away from the raccoon look.

With a little make-up, ask someone to make two little red spots on your neck. This gives the appearance that you were bitten by another vampire and now, you’re one of them. Even though this may not be real, it’s cute to work with a little storyline too.

Modern vampires don’t use capes like the ones we see on TV, but if you have a black overcoat, it would be a good idea to use that for your costume as well. Once you’re done with the costume and make-up, you’re all set for Halloween as a modern vampire!

Hallowindow – Mark Gervais

FAQ

What kind of equipment do you use for your projection?

I borrowed a Canon projector (model unknown) for the display. I pinned a white sheet to the
inside of my window and aimed the projector at it. I had to use a reversed video so that the
text in the animation was readable from outside the house. Click here to see my set-up.
The DVD includes reversed versions of the animations that use text.

What do you use to create your animation?

I use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for drawing and Adobe Flash and After Effects for the animation.
I work as a freelance illustrator and animator so this is kinda what I do everyday. All the artwork
in the video is original and drawn by myself. My friend Dewi Wood created the sound track.
He is a profession musician and uses Logic Pro to compose the work.
