Almost every character in Alice in Wonderland has a deep fascination for hats. The Madhatter, as his name suggests, is obviously a hat-person; and so are 4 other main characters who, in one way or another, were acquainted with the odd, tea-loving fellow.
While the Madhatter was known for his awkward gestures and obsession with hats, he was also one of Alice’s closest friends in Wonderland. We further witness his loyalty to her and to the White Queen in the 2010 movie adaptation. In one of the later scenes in the movie, we also see Johnny Depp furiously sewing and designing various hats for the Red Queen’s oddly shaped head. Now, if that’s not hat-crazy, then what is?
The Madhatter’s fascination for hats has become a costume pick as well. If you neither have the time or the money to find yourself a Madhatter costume, you could portray this odd character by simply wearing his highly recognizable top hat!
Now, with 22 Alice in Wonderland movie adaptations produced, there are various Madhatter hat versions for you to choose from. You could don the brightly-colored top hat used by the cartoon Madhatter character…
…Or Johnny Depp’s taller and wider-rimmed top hat:
In cartoons and earlier illustrations of the Madhatter, he is often seen with a classic top hat which is dark teal in color; the enigmatic numbers 10/6 first appeared with this top hat design.
To resemble the new Madhatter’s headpiece, you could try the Madhatter hat with an attached wig. While the Madhatter has no distinct features, Johnny Depp’s costume which includes red curly hair has often been associated with 2010 Alice in Wonderland’s Madhatter.
Now, just because the Madhatter is originally male doesn’t mean you can’t be his female counterpart. Whether you want to pull off a Madhatter look in your casual wear, a Madhatter cocktail hat will surely do the trick. Instead of a real hat though, this is worn as a headband.
