There are 22 adaptations of Lewis Carroll’s popular tale, the most recent was released this year and was directed and produced by the creepiest thinker in Hollywood today, Tim Burton. Johnny Depp played the role of the cryptic Madhatter with Australian beauty Mia Wasikowska as Alice.

Although the 2010 storyline was altered to have occurred in Alice’s pre-adult years, the magic and fantasy which we have all felt in Lewis Carroll’s story lived on in the movie adaptation. Tim Burton’s version was full of color and unique imagery. With a mix of Tim Burton’s dark and brooding imagination and Lewis Carroll’s unusual storyline and characters, the Alice in Wonderland 2010 movie adaptation became this year’s top favorite for kids and adults alike.
Aside from being a well-loved story and movie, Alice in Wonderland has also become a top pick for costume-themed events and Halloween parties; Alice’s costume has always been a highly recognizable piece along with the Queen of Hearts and the Madhatter.
Alice’s most common costume is her blue puffy-sleeved blouse and white apron. This dress gives her the adventurous farm girl look which stays timeless throughout the years. This iconic dress has been a fairy tale favorite and has also been used for other fairy tale film adaptations.
In the 2010 version of Alice in Wonderland, Alice’s dress took on a different design. Instead of the casual Victorian era dress, she is seen wearing an off-shoulder blue gown instead and throughout the film, her attire changes size and color, and at one point, she donned the Red Queen’s curtains.
Alice isn’t the only one who changes attire throughout the film. The sewing-obsessed Madhatter changes hats throughout the film as well and has even offered to give the Red Queen a hat makeover. However, being the Red Queen, she has declined almost every design proposed to her.
For party-goers and kids who love dressing up for Halloween, Alice in Wonderland is a good source for various costumes. After all, everyone in Wonderland is portrayed uniquely and the story itself is full of so many characters to choose from.
If you portrayed Alice in the past or if you are looking for a new character to portray, you could be the other well-loved characters from the Wonderland such as the Cheshire cat, Tweedledum or Tweedledee, the Madhatter, the White Rabbit or March Hare, Absalom the Caterpillar or the unforgiving Queen of Hearts!
For males, the Madhatter is considered the best pick since he has the most attractive suit in the story. Since there are various popular adaptations of Alice in Wonderland, anyone who wants to come as the Madhatter can choose from two different designs that are equally recognizable; however, since the 2010 film is still fresh in everyone’s memory, Johnny Depp’s suit is highly suggested.
If you want to be the smart and enigmatic cat, the Cheshire cat is a good choice for both men and women. Although the Cheshire cat has often been portrayed as a male, ladies could also dress as the Cheshire cat and not be mistaken for simply a girl in a cat suit. The Cheshire cat’s stripped tail makes this costume highly recognizable.
Absalom the Caterpillar and time-obsessed White Hair are only two of the three most popular talking characters in Wonderland. Absalom provides aide to Alice during her most troubling times while the White Hair constantly reminds her to show up on time on tea parties. If you want to represent any of these two characters in parties, you could come as the caterpillar in this huge and multi-legged caterpillar costume or as the White Rabbit in this full length attire, complete with bunny ears.
If you have a sibling or a twin brother, you should definitely portray Tweedledum and Tweedledee in parties. Their costumes are very recognizable since they are important characters in the tale: in book versions and in films.
Last but not the least, if you want to portray a villain, the Red Queen or the Queen of Hearts would be a very good pick. She is, after all, known for her stern attitude and merciless ways; your costume will be very recognizable in a crowd.
